What Smiley Man Check-In Is
Smiley Man Check-In is a parent-guided feelings check-in app for kids. Kids can name feelings, try small calming activities, save bright moments, and grow local Smiley Pets.
Parents can use the PIN-protected parent area to review app check-in patterns, manage privacy choices, export local data, delete local child data, and control optional features.
Smiley Man Check-In is not a diagnosis, screening, treatment, therapy, medical, or crisis-service app.
Version 3.9
Version 3.9 gives every Smiley Pet all six Glow Days again. The day after you pick an egg, the first check-in shows a little crack; the egg hatches the next day and grows up over three more days. Version 3.7 had shortened this to five days by mistake, and pets that are already growing carry on. On iPhone Duo, the Music Room DJ booth, Follow lights and My voice now fit on the closed phone, in tent pose and open. With lots of Stormy Me jars, the Older jars and Newer jars buttons move to the bottom bar. Nothing new is collected.
Version 3.8
Version 3.8 is made for iPhone Duo. Open it like a book and the feelings faces, calm activities and parent PIN sit on either side of the fold. Half fold it on a table and a calm activity plays on the upright half, with its buttons on the half lying flat. Close it and stand it on its side like a tent, and Breathing, Pop the Bubbles, Star Tracing and The Worry Jar put the activity beside its buttons. On every iPhone, More feelings and the Feelings Book button now fit on one line. Nothing new is collected.
Version 3.7
Version 3.7 adds parent report charts with Smiley Man Plus: the last 5 weeks, 12 weeks of feelings, the toughest time of day, what hard moments were about and which tools seemed to help, each with its own count. Make a summary turns the counts into a PDF on the device to share with a doctor or counsellor. The weekly email opens with this week next to the child’s usual week.
With Plus, a child’s month recap is ready on the 1st of the next month once they have 3 or more check-ins that month; in January the year recap takes December’s place. Smiley Man offers each new recap once, and any recap can be replayed from My recaps in the Feelings Book. Save to my photos adds the share card to Photos only when tapped.
An egg now hatches with the first check-in on the day after it is picked. On a Glow Day the buddy grows in a full-screen moment right after the check-in. Removing a child now tells you if any files could not be removed, with Try again.
Version 3.6
Version 3.6 adds List and Calendar views for Recent check-ins in the Feelings Book. Music Room libraries and full jar shelves are paged, with search and sorting for songs. Private iCloud Backup checks jar and song files and restores one complete backup at a time.
Calendar opens on the newest check-in. Tap a day for that day’s entries, use the month arrows, or open the whole year. The list remains available at any time.
Version 3.5
Version 3.5 adds hide & seek and Bedtime to Smiley Pet Park. Both are free.
To play hide & seek, tap Hide & seek in the bottom-left corner of the park. The lights go out and the buddies hide; drag or tap the flashlight to find them. In the evening the same button says Bedtime: tap each buddy to tuck it into bed. Finishing a game gives the current pet a Buddy Bond point, within the usual daily play limit. Smiley Man’s lines are bundled with the app and buddies are called by their kind, so a pet’s own name is never sent anywhere.
Drawings and songs now drop into the Stormy Me jar with a little wobble. From a jar note, Save to my photos saves a drawing as a picture or a song as a short video; the app asks only to add to Photos, not to read them.
Version 3.4
Version 3.4 rebuilds the rainbow color in drawing and makes Pet Park dance parties follow each song’s beat. Both are free.
Rainbow strokes now appear as the child draws, look the same when the finger lifts and stay quick on older iPads. The pen, pencil, marker and brush each keep their own look in rainbow. In a dance party, pets move quicker for fast songs, slower for slow ones and more gently in quiet parts. Smiley Pet Park and the Pet Book also fit smaller iPhones such as iPhone 13 mini, and removing a song in the Music Room now asks first.
Version 3.3
Version 3.3 adds the Music Room, a Pet Park dance party and a rebuilt Worry Jar. All three are free.
To make music, open Get Creative and choose Make Music. Play keys, guitar, drums, My voice, Loop band or Follow lights while Smiley Man and your pet bop along, or spin sounds at the DJ booth with Robot, Echo, Chipmunk and Monster effects. Tap Keep my song! to save a song on this device. Songs are not uploaded. Recording a child’s voice needs Voice Notes turned on in parent settings and iOS microphone permission.
For a dance party, tap the Dance tile in Smiley Pet Park and your pet dances to the beat of your songs. Free families can dance with the first Smiley Hamster; additional pets require a paid Smiley Man Plus subscription.
The Worry Jar is offered as a calm activity. Drop worries in, watch them settle, then choose Let it go. Worries are only for that activity and are cleared when the child leaves; they are not saved.
Messages for Stormy Me can now reveal a message from happy you and can hold songs a child keeps. From Home, open the jar and leave a voice note, drawing, written note, helpful idea or kept song. A jar fills at 20 notes; parts of one message stay together if it takes the jar past 20. Completed jars stay on the shelf even when a note is removed. Tap My jars to open a shelved jar. A check-in drawing or a song kept during a check-in can be copied to the jar while its original stays saved, and children can still leave another message.
Kid buttons are brighter, with picture icons. On iPad, the app works in portrait and landscape and with Split View, Slide Over and Stage Manager. Text follows the device’s Dynamic Type setting.
The Music Room, dance party with the first Smiley Hamster, Worry Jar, Messages for Stormy Me and core Pet Park play are free. Additional Smiley Pet eggs, expanded feelings and stories, read-aloud, parent reports, optional weekly report email, and Family Device Sync require a paid Smiley Man Plus subscription.
Common Parent Tasks
Use parent settings in the app to:
- Change privacy and permission choices.
- Turn Private iCloud Backup or Family Device Sync on or off.
- Run a backup or delete the private iCloud backup.
- Turn Voice Notes on or off.
- Turn Drawings & Journals on or off.
- Control Parent Raw Content Review.
- Control Smiley Man Voice.
- Create a local privacy export.
- Delete local child data.
Private iCloud Backup
Private iCloud Backup is recommended during parent-guided setup and can be turned off. It saves a complete recovery copy, including voice notes, drawings, journal and story text, Messages for Stormy Me jars, kept Music Room songs, and Smiley Pet progress. On a replacement device signed into the same iCloud account, choose restore before creating new family data and set a new local parent PIN. Deleting local data and deleting the private iCloud backup are separate controls.
Family Device Sync
Family Device Sync is separate and off by default. If a parent turns it on, Smiley Man Check-In uses Apple iCloud and CloudKit to share selected household data with linked parent devices.
If sync looks delayed, check that both devices are signed into iCloud, online, and updated to version 3.3. Linked parent viewers receive structured data; raw recordings, drawings, and journal or story text stay outside this sharing snapshot.
Parent Access
Parent access uses a local PIN. If access is temporarily unavailable, retry or reopen the app, then contact support if needed. A forgotten-PIN device reset requires device-owner authentication and erases local family data; the separate private iCloud backup is retained.
Purchases
Use Restore Purchases from the parent-gated Plus screen with the Apple Account used for the subscription. Manage or cancel subscriptions using Apple subscription settings. Eligible Apple Accounts can try the yearly Plus plan free for one week where Apple offers it. Availability, price and renewal terms come from StoreKit and appear in the parent-gated plans screen. After the trial, the yearly subscription automatically renews at the displayed price unless canceled at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
Feeling Size
Children can choose a feeling size before support and optionally check it again afterward. Finishing without an activity also offers the follow-up. Skipping a size keeps that answer unknown.
Smiley Pet hatching
Since version 3.9 a new egg grows through six Glow Days, one per local calendar day: the first rewardable check-in on the day after you pick an egg shows a little crack, the next day it hatches, and the buddy grows up over three more days. Version 3.7 had shortened this to five days by mistake; pets that were already growing carry on from where they are. One check-in a day helps it grow; extra check-ins save normally and cannot make it hatch or grow faster. If a day is missed, the pet simply rests; there is no decay or penalty.
Weekly report email
Weekly report email is optional and requires Smiley Man Plus. Version 3.2 and later offer setup at the end of onboarding for Plus families. You can also open Weekly email setup in the parent-gated Settings.
Select the children, approve sharing, and choose Confirm email and set up reports. Confirm the link in your inbox, then return to the app. It completes setup using the permission you already gave; there is no second turn-on tap. Reports begin after the 24-hour activation notice, with no second email click required. Older inbox-only setups may still ask you to approve sharing and choose Turn on weekly reports.
Connection status appears at the top of setup. You can change the selected children with a new sharing approval without confirming the same inbox again. Pause or remove the email connection there. Resetting all local app data also clears this device's connection; if offline, remote removal is retried when the app is reopened online. This does not cancel your Apple-managed Plus access.

Crisis Or Emergency Support
Smiley Man Check-In is not a crisis-service app. If a child may be in immediate danger or needs urgent help, contact local emergency services or a qualified professional.
Plus Offer Expiry
A non-renewing Plus offer ends without an automatic charge. After the app confirms that Plus has ended, it offers a parent-gated renewal prompt at the next safe visit to Home or the parent area. Families who stay Free can receive in-app reminders after 3, 10, and 30 days. These are local reminders, not push notifications. Free check-ins, drawing, saved data, and the first pet remain available.
Smiley Pet Park
Smiley Pet Park, the Sparkle Shop, pet naming, and capped extra check-in rewards are built-in parts of the app. The first rewardable check-in each day can advance egg or pet growth once. More check-ins save normally but cannot speed up that daily growth. All feelings earn the same base daily reward.
The first Smiley Pet grows through a gentle Hatch Cycle: the day after you pick it, it shows a little crack, then it hatches and grows up over three more days, six Glow Days in all. A missed day never makes an egg or pet sad, hungry, sick, behind, or reset. Additional eggs and pets are parent-gated Smiley Man Plus features; Sparkles are local rewards and are not sold.
Parents can delete the selected child’s Smiley Pet Park data separately in Settings > Privacy & Data. This removes that child’s local egg, pets, Sparkles, and shop items while keeping check-ins and drawings. The action requires confirmation. Private iCloud backup deletion remains a separate control.
